The existing park is a small open space of 1.27 hectares situated in the heart of Ashley Cross Conservation Area, an urban area of Poole and was originally built and opened in 1890 by the Prince of Wales. It forms an invaluable green space and local facility hosting a number of community events throughout the year. Many original features have been lost over time and the enhancements restore some of these in line with the Council's objectives whilst adding new features to reflect the changing needs and aspirations of present day park users. Following extensive public consultation, the scheme completes a partial restoration of the park. |
It includes a carefully sourced, salvaged and repaired cast iron Victorian fountain, an informal performance space, a toddlers play area including a story telling space, petanque area, and upgraded paths and park entrances. The construction uses quality materials and simple detailing for a sympathetic, robust and sustainable solution. Sarah Austin of The Borough of Poole commented: "The granite is stunning." and Richard Nicholson also of The Borough of Poole wrote: "We have had an external consultant assessing a number of our open spaces and he thought that Poole Park was fantastic". |
